What is Most Important at Your Blog?
The arguments about which are the most important factors in creating a successful blog have echoed across the internet for years.
Bloggers are constantly debating the importance of the issues that impact their blogs effectiveness. If two concepts are discuss, invariably the conversation will always turn from how to effectively implement that principle to how important it is compared to other factors.
Hotly Debated Topics in the Blogosphere
Here’s a few examples of what I’m talking about:
- Is it more important to focus on SEO or to write for real people?
- Is it more effective to build your on-page SEO or your off-page SEO?
- Is it more important to focus on writing or to focus on design?
- Is it more important to build traffic from search engines or from social media?
- Is it more important to focus on networking or on building great content?
Flying High Requires Everything You’ve Got
Imagine if you will that you are a pilot of an airplane with four engines and you need to get somewhere as fast as you can. In order to get off the ground, you only need to power up one of those engines. However, the drawback to that is that you will get off the ground slowly and once you get in the air your maximum speed will be greatly limited.
If you want to get somewhere fast, you’re going to power up all four engines. You’re going to do whatever it takes to get it off the ground and to the destination as fast as possible.
It would be ridiculous to argue about which engine is the most important. Just fire them all up and get to where you need to go. This is the mindset that most bloggers need to adopt.
Those who do both will go farther faster.
Instead of debating which are the most important aspects of blogging, let’s work to accomplish as many of them as we can. Let’s attract search engine traffic and let’s write compelling articles for real people. Let’s make a strong use of keywords and let’s focus on building quality inbound links.
In almost every instance, when someone debates which concept is the most important, the person who does both will go farther and get there faster. The blogger who debates whether he should bring in traffic from search engines or social media will almost always follow behind the person who does both. The blogger who debates between better content and better design will always trail the blogger who build strength into both.
Group Reflection
Don’t keep debating about which concepts are the most important for your blog. If it has any importance at all, take a few minutes to learn about it and practice it at your site.
If you want to surpass your competition then you’re going to need to employ every tactic in your arsenal. Don’t pick and choose. Throw everything that you’ve got at them.

I can’t say anything but “great article” Nick! Its like debate for an SEO guy, a web designer and a usability expert eh.
Nonetheless, just like what you said above.”If you want to surpass your competition then you’re going to need to employ every tactic in your arsenal. Don’t pick and choose. Throw everything that you’ve got at them.”

this is true, I think most of us are having troubles to implement only few things because of technical skills. I have theme because I have built few websites before. But I can understand the hurdles of those who are able to only write great content but are not so skilled. I know that you can build a free blog in few seconds but most boggers can’t think of anything more complicated. So most of the time it’s compromise.
My advice is to spent few bugs on good website. I have found that I m more motivated to blog when I am blogging on website which design I like. Design matters I think.
Good luck to all of you

Great post. I do hem and haw about which approach to take. My biggest problem is time – I have a long laundry list, and can’t get to everything. So, I tend to gravitate first towards writing content (geared towards readers first, SEO second), then towards the less time-intensive stuff (Twitter, for example), and finally to the items that require me to roll up the sleeves, such as messing with site design, etc.

Evan, my hunch is that it’s easier to learn to write really great content than it is to learn to write highly effective SEO articles. So that’s what I’m focusing on myself.
More reason to do both.
Keep a very close on Mr Cardot here, because I believe he’s doing both, and reasonably well.

While I get your overall concept Nick, and we have had discussions on this, I tend to think there is somewhat of an order to do things (of course I don’t follow that either) like I think you should get a design before you write great content, and you should write great content before setting out to network (makes it easier to network sometimes). And maybe those aren’t necessarily the right order either, you could be writing your pillar content while designing your site.
I just think that some people will get overwhelmed if they have never done this before (blog) and are told to fire up all engines and go, especially if they don’t understand how to use all the engines.
As I said though, for those of us that are already blogging, and may have an understanding for all your points, absolutely great advice to use all aspects equally….

This is one reason to build of a strong loyal community. No one can be a master of everything, and most that try end up failing miserably all the way around…usually just quitting outright.
A strong community leads inevitably to the ability for barter or outright hiring of people you already know/trust.
This I know first hand.

For me, there 3 very important aspects of blogging. Content, traffic and relationship building. We always have to remember that content is a money making machine and if paired up with some good amount of traffic , the results are astounding. Then as we establish our credibility, we try to take care of our dear readers by engaging with them and helping them grow with us.
