The Marathon of the Blogging World #1
Our host today is Don Gilbert. If you're interested in getting in front of the readers of Site Sketch 101, check out our guest posting invitation here.
The Blogging world is like an enormous marathon. It’s not a sprint, but a cross country endurance race.
There are around 100 million runners in this race. Every day, new runners are joining, but they are forced to start at the beginning. Every day, all day, these people are running against each other. But because it’s an endurance race, they aren’t angry with each other, and there isn’t too much rivalry, because you respect the other’s ability to run with you. Everybody wants to win, but they don’t typically have hard feelings.
There are many different types of running styles. Some do the slow but consistent approach. Not a lot of sprinting, but no water breaks. Others prefer to go in spurts, sprinting for as long as they can, but then slowing down because they got tired. Some runners just seem to have no end of excess energy, and just keep sprinting and sprinting. Everybody watches them go by and wonders how much longer can they keep it up. They watch them, jealously waiting for them to slow down, so that they can take the lead again.
In this 100 million man marathon, there are many different packs of runners. Based on how much time they’re able to sprint, and when they joined the race, they are in different groups. You have the pack leaders like Matt Cutts, Problogger and Seth Godin, who have been running for years. They joined the race early and have a huge jump on everybody. Then you have the second group, with the DoshDosh and Daily Blog Tips.
Close behind you find the third group – Gary Conn, John Chow, and Tyler Cruz. Following them there are hordes of others, running and running, fighting each other to move up into these groups. These blogs have been running forever, but some have slipped up. Some like DoshDosh have stumbled – they have gotten tired and tapped out. Now he’s trying to make a comeback, can he catch up again? There are hundreds of blogging clambering to take his place, trying to step into the second tier.
Of these millions of blogs, very few have remained active. Very few have been able to run the race for long. 90% of these blogs have faltered after only three months of running, most even sooner than that. Only about 15 million blogs have remained active, and are still running.
The amount of runners are growing every day. There was a 30 million growth in runners this past year. But only 2 million of those new runners continue to run the race. None seem to be able to have the endurance. None have the motivation, ambition and drive to keep them running.
Matt Cutts, Problogger, and Seth Godin, have already reached their end. They are guaranteed a metal, they’ve already achieved the success they were seeking when they started blogging. They can see the finish line.
But the new bloggers, they can’t see the finish line. They dream of what it’ll be like, but few have the prowess to keep themselves running for it. They don’t have the commitment. They don’t have the energy to start off sprinting. Most of these blogs start off at a jog, telling themselves that they’ll ease into it, and start sprinting once they’ve gained some momentum. Once they’ve achieved some success they’ll start sprinting to maximize on it. But the success never comes, they just join the pack of jogging bloggers, and never get any ambition to start running.
Gradually, they get frustrated of their lack of success, and fizzle out. Few can keep themselves motivated through the rocky terrain at the start of the race. They haven’t gotten used to this arduous task and so they struggle. Few have the insight to look behind them. If you look behind you, you’ll see the millions of racers behind you that are trying to catch up with where you are. This can give you motivation to continue, to chase the people ahead of you.
This is the first in a two part series on this topic. The second portion will be published in a few days. Stay tuned.

I have my plan.
Not surprised Dosh Dosh got tired of it. You hit it dead on, I wonder if he’ll get the mojo back.

Totally agree with you. It is like a marathon and the bloggers are like the participants of the competition.
For the participants, there will be those who have experienced in the competition and those who join for the first time.
Obviously, for those who have the experienced, the chance of success for theme is high as they have a lot experience and failures that they can learn from. From what they have learnt, they will make plan to win the competition.
However, not everybody will learn from their past. They are stubborn which will lead to another failure.
For the first timers, the chance is pretty slim for them to win. However, for the ‘briliant’ participants who realize this fact, will look for those who have the experienced and learn some tips from them. They make friends with those who are good with what they do.
By doing this, they will at least can beat those who have no experience and no clue on how to win the race.
There will be also those who are too arrogant and believe that they will win the race on their own. But, in the end, most of times, these people are those who are at the back.
The same thing goes to blogging. There are experienced bloggers are succeed with what they do and those who still finding the directions.
There are also new bloggers who have achieved so much in a short period of time. They network with experienced bloggers, make guest posts and keep learning from others.
For me, the key of success is keep learning from the beginning to the end, network with others as they can help and teach you a lot and there is no use of being arrogant as it will lead you to failures.

I quite agree with you Helmi.
Life is a school and experience is the teacher.
Trial and error is such an integral part of our lives and it will be foolhardy to try to live a life devoid of it.
I also think that a network make the ‘Net Work.
So it is wisdom to find one and join.

Collaboration with people allows for you to come up with new ideas or projects. Think about all the blog posts or ideas you have had. Most of them have probably came from outside sources. Collaboration uses your thoughts and these outside sources to make sense of something.
Additionally, collaboration builds friendships. I have personally experienced this through Skyping and using Google Wave.

That’s what I call a change for good!. What I am trying to say is, at least, you learn from your experience that, nothing beats blogging on things you love or passionate about. When you blog about those things you are really passionate, then, you wouldn’t have to think of any topic you will write, it will just come naturally.

No qualms Dana, You are not alone. In fact we are a crowd – the slow runners, late starter etc.
What matter most is surviving. If it is also any consolation, A lot of your “competitors” will die out naturally if Darwin’s theory is anything to go by.
I will never stop running too. My goal is to become the #1 blogger in Nigeria.

I am definitely in that wide last group, but I guess that group can also be divided into sections. I wonder which section would I be in?
I’ve checked the DoshDosh blog, I must admit I never heard of it before. I’ve noticed the irregularity in post frequency. I guess that’s bad
And there is this funny error at the bottom
Fatal error: Call to undefined function akst_share_form() in /nfs/c01/h15/mnt/36436/domains/doshdosh.com/html/wp-content/themes/DoshDosh4/footer.php on line 10
At least it shows on my browser.
This is an interesting picture of blogosphere, I guess it can be portrayed like that.
If I ever hit the third group with those guys, it’ll be close to a miracle
