Success: Are you riding the wrong horse?

Our host today is Joella Molson. If you're interested in getting in front of the readers of Site Sketch 101, check out our guest posting invitation here.

I was really struggling with my blog. I wanted more readers, I wanted more comments, I wanted better web stats, I wanted more front page face time on Google, I wanted… Well you get the idea, I wanted the things that so many bloggers are after. The problem was I wasn’t getting them in the ways everyone kept telling me I would.

I tried everything the gurus said I should try to make my blog more successful. And I mean I tried every idea out there, all at once. But it seemed to make little or no difference. I was trying to do so many things for my blog that my head was spinning.

Stop Everything and Truly Assess Your Efforts

Then I did myself a favor. I ceased all my frenzied activities and took a step back. Then I asked myself why I was making so little headway? Was I missing something?

I certainly was going in way too many directions at once to really be effective at anything. But my biggest problem was that I was focusing on the wrong thing. I sensed I needed a new focus.

I stepped back and looked at my blog with a dispassionate eye. Suddenly I had an epiphany. It’s not my blog, not really. It belongs to my audience, to the readers. Well duh? I knew that. But somehow it wasn’t translating into how I was trying to create a more successful blog.

I changed horses in mid-stream, I completely changed my tactics. I took some time to get creative and bring my efforts home. I stopped asking myself what I needed to do to create a successful blog. I formulated a new guiding question: What could I do to make my blog better for my readers?

My new mission in life was to make my blog as user-friendly and interactive as possible. After several months of creative experimentation, I’m finally seeing a payoff. More unique visitors, more visitors coming from search engines, more commenting, readers who stay longer which results in a lower bounce rate.

How does this benefit my potential readers?

It took time but it wasn’t really difficult to achieve. Now all my blog related activities are based on “How does this benefit my reader or potential readers?”

Here’s how it translated into action. First I took great pains to make it very easy for my readers to find what they wanted. The top section of my blog now includes:

  • A clearly visible navigation menu on all pages.
  • A List of the 5 most recent post titles.
  • A drop-down menu for browsing blog categories.
  • A search box for finding posts on their desired topics.
  • Access to subscriptions via RSS reader or email.
  • An invitation to follow me on Twitter.
  • And a featured items section where I feature my readers blogs.

I feature a minimum of 3 bloggers on the top of my blog every month: my current blog carnival host, my top commentator for the previous month and my top Entrecard dropper for the previous month. There’s even a fourth spot that I can use for whatever I want.

All these things were a great start, but I felt I needed to do more. How could I make them a part of my blog and not just merely spectators.

I put my thinking cap on and here’s what I came up with:

  • A monthly Blog Carnival that readers could host and or contribute to.
  • A guest posting page with a form for submitting guest posts.
  • A page with a form for suggesting topics and getting blog help.

Not only are my readers getting more involved, but I’m having a blast. It’s fun getting to know them and so rewarding to help them with their blog problems or craft a post from their suggestions. My blog is now a group effort.

Going the Extra Mile…Make it Personal

But I didn’t stop there, I also installed some useful plugins:

  • KeywordLuv and CommentLuv to encourage and reward readers for commenting
  • Subscribe to comments plugin so readers could follow commenting conversations.
  • Top commentators plugin on the homepage with a dofollow link back to their blogs.

Recently I began using Twitter to focus on potential readers and their needs. Now I search for tweets from bloggers who have problems, blog issues and questions. Then I research until I find the answer they need and tweet it to them. I’m happy to say that I’m seeing more Twitter followers and it’s good to really be able to help.

Lastly, I decided to add a personal touch to networking with others in my niche. I visit and comment on colleagues’ blogs. I share and promote their posts and special projects whenever I can. I regularly link back to them in posts that I write. I even send them guest posts already written and ready to go . No one yet has refused one.

Now I’m a part of a very caring and supportive group of colleagues. Who knew there were so many amazingly giving people online? Especially surprising when they are suppose to be my competition!

Well there you have it. It certainly is amazing what a little creative user-centric thinking can achieve. I started getting more of what I wanted when I focused on what I could give instead. Could this be the Golden Rule of blogging? And all because I changed horses in mid-stream.

That’s hardly a fair thing to say. And not something you should post in a public comment.

If you’ve got something to say that isn’t helpful, nor relevant to the current topic. Then you shouldn’t comment.

If you want to address such a question, perhaps you should use Nick’s contact form. He answers all his email and I’m sure he’d be happy to address your concerns one on one.

So you think if a reader is disappointed with a blog’s post publishing rate where he is subscribed to, he shouldn’t say that in public, right? ok. I think I should start learning about this whole thing anew.

Since you’ll be happy if I don’t comment then I won’t. I hope now you won’t say that I should unsubscribe as well.

Actually, I would be very happy if you did unsubscribe, Sajib. It’s incredibly rude of you to attack me on Joella’s post and I have no desire at all to have someone who does that at my site just so that I can have an extra number on my subscriber count. It would have been much more appropriate to have contacted my via email.

On the internet we have a word that describes a person who posts this type of a comment, Troll. I’m not just calling you a name. In fact, here is a link to support that name so that you can understand how you are actually making us feel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet) .

I would rather challenge you to go out and create something better so that those who are disappointed in this community will have a great alternative. If you see a shortcoming, you should either let me know about it in a more appropriate manner or use it as an opportunity to do better yourself. You should certainly not use a post of one of my excellent guest authors to flame me.

You used a word that Sajib would be wise to learn the true meaning of.

            COMMUNITY

You haven’t just built a one man horse and pony show here. You’ve built a community of readers and contributors. And you graciously share your stage with the rest of us. Giving us the opportunity to guest post and reach a whole new audience.

And personally I’ve never had any problem with the quality of the posts that you publish here. Whether they are your own or those of your guest authors, they are always top notch!

I just think that you may express yourself and suggest things to anyone. But there is a way to do that and, just as you never scold a child in public or reprimand an employee in front of others, you take the matter on a private level. I know for sure that Nic has always cared about his readers. Like everybody else, he is probably sometimes caught in life and overwhelming tasks. And believe it or not, Nic has always supported me even if I’m only a little drop in that ocean of blogs.
BTW, Joella, I love your post and it makes me reflect on my blog as well.

I went to this little restaurant recently with my wife. After the meal, when I was given the check, I noticed this little message on the back:
“If you’re happy with our service please tell all your friends, but if not please tell us”

I just thought that was somehow appropriate here.

Hey Joella. Thanks for the great post. I’m sure that you’ve noticed that I use CommentLuv here at Site Sketch 101 but I don’t advertise it much. I think that it is a terrific way to reward those that get involved in the conversation but I don’t want people to get involved just for the link so this way they find out about it after they post there comment. I think that’s kind of fun.

I also offer dofollow comment links for anyone who have more than 5 comments on the site. Again, I want to reward people who get involved in the conversation but I don’t want people to comment-bomb just for a link. I think though that it’s a fun way to provide a little touch of reward to those who get involved.

I strongly agree with the premise of this article. Usability is absolutely essential. Asking ourself that simple question, “How will this help my potential readers?” is a powerful aid in guiding us toward more effective content.

Thank you for making that so incredibly clear here.

Not to mention your talent for sharing a keen insight or two as well.

Many of the changes I have recently made to Blogs With Wings were inspired by you and your blog. By the articles, by the sense of community and by your interactions here.

If I’ve made the importance of focusing on your readers clear, then I owe a great deal of that clarity to what I’ve learned from you.

Please don’t ever feel unworthy. There is a story in the Bible about several sickened lepers who stumble upon an recently abandoned Army camp that is still filled with food, supplies and more. Most of the lepers were simply digging in and enjoying the bounty but one leper felt bad that he had it and that others didn’t so he went back to tell his friends. He wasn’t better than his friends. He had simply discovered something that would be helpful.

That’s how I feel. I’m no more worthy. I’m not better. I simply feel like I’ve made a few discoveries that have really helped me and I just want to share them to help as many people as possible. I hope that makes sense.

Your blog looks awesome. I have been looking into a template change myself. I think I’m going to go the Thesis Theme with custom template and add some new tools.

Many of us can definitely relate to the fact that repeating the same process over and over will not garner new results!

    Now… Sajib…

You have every right to your opinion – and it may be a valid one.

It was just your timing and your method.

Kudos out to Joella for addressing Sajib directly! (She’s a feisty one, isn’t she?!)

Good point Jeff, doing the same thing, over and over, that’s not getting results is the old “beating a dead horse” cliche.

Much kinder to switch horses than beat them, even if they already have passed on. It’s also a more adaptive strategy than repeating old useless patterns that garner no results.

Of course your blog theme is only one shiny bit of what will attract readers. But the impression that a well designed, easy to navigate template can make cannot be denied.

Best of luck with the redesign!

Hi Joella, well put together blog and congratulations on putting your blog in order. It’s great to try new things, but as you mention trying to do everything all at once can become detrimental. Realizing your blog is for your readers and taking action is critical as you have realized. It’s kind of like in marketing, you try not to think of the ‘product’ you are selling but more the result – your not selling a TV your selling entertainment, sofa – relaxation, blog – community?

Taking a step back to evaluate our blogs every once in a while is, in my opinion, one of the best things that a blogger can do. Sometimes we don’t realise that we haven’t been blogging to the best of our efforts so taking that bit of time to just say ‘hmm, what can I change about my blog?’ is really useful.

In the end, if it improves our blogs and it makes them better for the readers, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t do this more often.

There is no doubt that many bloggers are trying to “get” something out of blogging, but I believe that success will come more easily to those who are willing to give.

The people who read and support the blog are the ones who will make you or break you. So giving them quality in every aspect of your blog is essential.
