2009 saw the ascension of one of the greatest new websites available online.  Site Sketch 101 was launched just over six months ago and since that day some amazing content has come to life on it’s pages.

As I look back through this past year, I’m amazed at how far we’ve come and I’m excited at the plans and potential that we have in 2010.

As a tribute to 2009, I’ve decided to post 15 articles that have really stood out in my mind.  To those of you who’ve been on this journey with me, I thank you.  I hope that many more will join in throughout this coming year.

There are three fundamental principles that I believe are necessary to build a successful blog.  Those three principles are awesome content, brilliant design, and commanding influence.  I’ve selected five articles from each topic to share with you here today as we look back over that past year.

Awesome Content

A collection of articles that help you develop content that is fun, is compelling, is easy-to-read, meets your user’s needs, provides excellent information, is well-written, and uses proper grammar.

Brilliant Design

These articles will guide you into producing a layout that is easy on the eyes, easy to navigate, looks professional, sets you apart from the crowd, is search engine optimized, and is warm and inviting to the readers.

Commanding Influence

These resources will empower and inspire you as the author to connect personally with your readers, to answer questions, to exhibit strong leadership, to demonstrate sacrifice by putting your readers needs before your own, and more.

Group Discussion

Today’s group discussion is going to be in two parts.  First, I want to know if there is a particular article on Site Sketch 101 that has really stood out to you.  What did you like about it? How was it helpful? Second, I want to know what you believe your best article was over the past twelve months. This is your chance to promote your site in the comments section.

Happy New Year’s Eve (Eve), Nick!

At this site, I’ve found 10 “Elements of Highly Effective Articles” has helped me very much. I enjoyed first reading it, and I occasionally use it sort of as a quick reference, for a bit of inspiration sometimes.

I believe my best article over at my blog was a series of tutorials called Creating a PHP CMS. I wrote it as I was learning how to do the same thing, so it ended up being a tutorial for people who had little knowledge of web development to get started with practical implementations, instead of doing boring exercises involving loops, etc.

I believe it has helped many people, as those are some of the posts with a higher number of comments than most. I wrote it back in August, and I still get new people following the tutorials and asking new questions about it.

I remember seeing you write that series and I even tried to follow it a little bit but I’m still learning PHP and my learning curve on it seems to be pretty slow. I’ve got most of it’s basic functions figured out and I can manipulate most of the WordPress template tags. But I’ll get there someday.

You mentioned the word “mind” and I like that. Hehe. I’ve always admired your blog’s design, Nick, and I agree that it’s one of the important elements that one needs in establishing a great blog. To tell you honestly, that’s how you caught my attention and one of the reasons why I keep coming back.

Awesome articles and pics you have there in your list, btw. I will surely check them out.

I believe that design is one of the 3 cornerstones upon which a successful blog is built. You can’t have an amazing blog without an amazing design to showcase your work. I’ve seen a lot of people look past awesome content because it didn’t ‘look’ good. Thanks for the kind words and please let me know if you need anything.

I didn’t really like that almost all of posts you mentioned were list posts and only one real article. I wish you to make more real articles next year and don’t make your blog dissapear in dull list post blogs category. Have fun on 2010!

I just started reading this blog a little less than a month ago. No posts really jump out and strike me. I am still all so overwhelmed trying to figure it all out.

I do agree with Ryhen Satch that the design is what struck me as unbelievable. Keep up the great work in 2010. I hope to eventually be able to learn more myself.

This post 9 Ways To Increase Comments on your blog was particularly helpful to me, because that is something I want – more comments on my blog.

For the best post of my own blog, I don’t know really, I find this one one of the most original, all of my other posts are quite ordinary I think.

This is a great compilation. My personal favourite would have to be the article titled “10 Killer Ways to Boost Your Site’s Usability”.

I’ve always had a keen interest in UX design so the article was most certainly enlightening.

Loving your work here on Site Sketch. Keep up the great work Nicholas!

Writing for Real People sticks out in my mind as a great series (video). You really drove home the point that we are ultimately writing for others.

I’m still working on my writing quality and as such I can’t think of any one post on my site that I would recommend over the rest.

    Have a Happy New Year..
