Maximizing the SEO Quality of Your Links

75cdee7a9300db3a9163ee6282e464db 0 Del.icio.us

Links make the internet go around.  They’re the roadways that guide us to new sites, to new resources, and to new opportunities to engage, interact and learn.

But we’re not the only ones who draw guidance from the many links scattered around the net.  Search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing rely on links to guide them in many ways.

A great example of this is Google’s index and Page Rank system.  Page Rank is one of the factors that helps determine how important a page is compared to other pages on similar topics.  Google creates Page Rank for sites based on the quantity, quality and content of the links pointing to a given page.  Let’s consider those three factors for just a moment.

  • Quantity: Volume is important. Every link to your web page is like a vote telling Google that another webmaster favors you.
  • Quality: Not all links are created equal. Just one link from a PR 5 site is worth many links from a PR 1 site.
  • Content: Links from sites with similar content help Google further determine the value of your page on that subject.

Check out the following statement:

If you click here, you’ll find another amazing website called Blogussion which provides great tips and advice to bloggers.

Notice the link at the beginning of the statement that points to Blogussion’s home page.  The text click here is the text that Google uses as it works to figure out what a page is about.  As a result of that link, Google might as well figure that their site is abut clicking here. It’s common sense to each of us that Bloggussion probably has nothing to do with clicking here and yet many of us are linking to other websites in the same way.

Now let’s revise our sample statement above to improve the quality of our outbound link:

If you’re looking for an amazing website that provides quality blogging tips and advice then you should definitely check out Blogussion.

This improved style of linking will accomplish two main things.  First, it will allow Google a more advanced idea of what their website is all about.  Second, it will allow Google a more detailed idea what your site is about as it calculates the type of resources you are linking to.

It’s also important to note that you can use this same technique to link to external resources and to link to other resources within your own site.

Group Reflection:

Are you linking to other websites and resources with generic, worthless links or are you maximizing the potential of every link on your site?  What about your own links? Are you linking to your other articles and resources with high quality text or with generic labels?

P.S. If you’re not already an active reader of Blogussion, I highly recommend you check them out. They provide some tremendous blogging advice and best practices.

See how I did that?

The anchor text is very important for links.

It’s generally not good for SEO to tell users to click here, but links that say something like “Click here for great info” generally get clicked more than “Great info”. So you have to decide what’s more important: SEO or getting clicks?

But if I’m linking to another site, and the name of the site is in the same paragraph, I’d add the link to the actual name of the site, so that users actually know where they’re going. If you’re recommending a site to a user, most will expect the link to be on the name of the site, not the description.

So there are really three things to think about: SEO, generating clicks, and usability. I bet there are more, because links are complex things.

While we’re on the subject of links – what do you use to manage your affiliate links? I like the fact that it filters simply by the words in my comment, adding links to the keywords you have set. i.e. the links below are automatically generated – all I did was type the actual words.

How true! I created an article last November entitled “60 Ways To Improve Your Memory & Brain Power” and I loaded the silly thing with quality outbound links and I noticed that Google recently gave it a pagerank of 3. It doesn’t seem like any other site linked to that article and I never even bothered to promote it, but I was surprised how the search engine recognized it. However, there are tons of websites competing for the keywords in that title and I’m hoping it will climb its way up to the front page as time goes by.

This also just proves that PR is not calculated solely by backlinks but also with contents and other stuffs.

In order to be ready for it, we need to study a lot.

You made some great points on anchor text and links Nicholas.

However, Google Page Rank is now outdated because of some blackhat practice called PR sculpting or siloing. After much abuse of PR building techniques, Google finally dropped it by taking the Pagerank tab off Google Webmaster Tools. Google employee Susan Mowska gives some detail on it here. This also explains why some low ranking pages can compete with older websites when they leave the Google sandbox.

Sachin @ Web Design Mauritius » It’s important to understand that Page Rank is not irrelevant or outdated. It may be less important than it once was, but it’s still important for a few reasons. Be sure to check out this article called Group Discussion: Is Page Rank Important?

Just because something is no longer the most important factor doesn’t mean that we should ignore it. Especially when the practices that build page rank also build strong search engine listings. Wouldn’t we want to get links from as many sites as possible that are good quality? If not for the ranking for the actual referral traffic that we get from quality links?

Linking is something so many people don’t give much thought to and it’s, as those other small things are, something that makes a big difference with your blog.

There is a right way and a wrong way to do anything and linking is no different.

Just saying click here is the same boring old message anyone could say. Great creative and actually put some darn text in the link that way it inspires people to click on it.

I’ll be honest, I’m more apt to click a link that says something other than just: click here. I already know I’m going to click there. Tell me something I haven’t heard lol.

    Great post, Nick!

A good point. Deep linking is a great way to spread link love across your blog. Some newbie or let me say beginners tend to link only the homepage or the main page. I know about the importance of getting lots of quality backlinks from relevant websites for quite some time now.

Yet, just recently I began to realize the importance of outbound links and their anchor texts. Although you actually deteriorate your own PR by having too many outbound links, it actually helps you at the same time, because if other similar site links to your site, and your site links to some third site with preferably targeted anchor text, it makes Google to “think” about your page as a part of the bigger system, bigger picture.

So, just recently, I’ve began to not just link to other relevant sites, but to use proper texts for those links. It just looks all together more natural.

Davor Gasparevic @ Internet marketing ebooks » You don’t lose any PR at all by linking out. Your PR does not get deteriorated. In fact, Google has released information that states that whether you have 1 link or 5 your level of page rank is divided among all links and shared with each of them. This doesn’t mean that your site loses page rank. It means that the page rank is shared in the same way that fire is shared when one candle lights another.

Linking with relevant anchor tag will definitely more beneficial than linking with “Click Here”. I saw many people still using this style to link out, it doesn’t help anyone at all.

I used to link out with relevant keyword, as well as link to my blog internal page, I’ve stopped using Click Here for quite some times.

Click Here still help a bit, at least you have a backlink, but when it comes to keyword optimization, you help him to rank for “Click Here” instead of the keyword that they optimize for.

    Cheers,

If you check your backlinks and you find out that some bloggers or site links to your site using some other kind of text or the dreaded “Click Here”, email him/her to change it for good. Explain them the benefits of it for him/her or for the blog he/she owns. In this way, you are really maximizing the quality of your links.

So go check out your backlinks, analyze it well and you might find something to change to.
