He's one of the six men who raised the famous flag on Iwo Jima. Of the six men who raised that flag, only 3 walked off of that island alive. Of those 3 only one lived what we would define as a normal life. Ira was not that one. He had such a difficult time coping with things that he had seen on that island that when he came home he was drunk more often than sober until eventually he died inebriated in a pile of his own vomit. He is an American Hero who was tortured until the day he died as a result of the sacrifices he made for us. But remember, he is only 1 of millions who've stepped forward. P.S. I love July.
