How to Blog as a Newbie
News and Updates at Site Sketch 101Our host today is Jen Smith. If you're interested in getting in front of the readers of Site Sketch 101, check out our guest posting invitation here.
I started my blog at the end of July 2009. This is the first blog I have ever had, and although I was fairly techie, the world of blogging and social media was completely new to me. I have learnt some useful lessons that I wanted to share here.
Spend a little time getting acquainted
I spent a little getting to know other bloggers and many of them were really helpful with giving advice about how to set my blog up and sharing their experiences. I made a point of commenting on the sites I enjoyed and also let people know my site was going to be live soon.
Be passionate about your subject matter
I heard this time and time again, when researching about how to set my blog up. Blog about something you are passionate about because, you will be writing about your subject matter a lot! Luckily I have found my passion and to date, I have enjoyed running my blog immensely, but I can see that this is great advice. Setting up a blog about mortgages just because this is a popular area for example isn’t going to last long if you are not genuinely interested in this area. Think of the bigger picture and whether or not you can see yourself writing about your subject matter in a years time.
Set up your blog
I did a fair bit of research beforehand about how to set my website up. I set it up thought WordPress and I haven’t looked back since! There are many resources online to help you with this and some bloggers who set up sites for free (usually if you but hosting as an affiliate through them). This is useful too, but personally I have enjoyed learning these skills for myself. See what your priorities are, to decide what is best for you.
Get on Twitter
Twitter a great way to meet fellow bloggers and network and let other people know about your blog. When I first started I was a bit shy, and it took me a little while to get my head around how it worked but I have found using it as a way to chat to people and have fun works really well. Be natural and reach out to people too. Also link to your new posts (you can make the links smaller here.) I might tweet about my own posts a few times a day – don’t do it too often and spam people but share at different times of the day to reach different audiences. Also others that enjoy your posts will retweet them and I also do this for posts I enjoy.
Be genuine
Interacting with people online is different to offline, but being genuine and real as with real life, makes the difference. Help others and don’t be afraid to ask for help. I have been amazed at the support and help other bloggers have given me and try and help others when they ask for it too.
Find your own rhythm
We are all different and have different schedules and commitments. I read a lot of good advice about how to build a successful blog but I am careful to only take what works for me. Some people say to grow a successful site post every day and work till your eyeballs bleed! Others say do it at a sustainable pace and don’t let it become hard work. I think there is probably a bit of truth in all of these posts, but I would say always make sure it works for you. There is no point working 14 hours a day and burning yourself out after a few months, or not doing enough work to get where you want to be on the other hand. Listen to others that have been there but ultimately do what’s right for you and your own situation.
Be consistent
I heard this message from so many bloggers when I started blogging and it really stuck with me. Readers like to know when you will post whether that is every day or once a week. Finding my own pace made a difference to this. I post at least once a week, which is right for me. I realised
I would rather do one good quality post a week than rush to do more just so I was posting more often.
Some popular bloggers like Tina at thinksimplenow post more irregularly but have a huge following, so again this isn’t set in stone. For me consistency has worked, especially when growing my readership, but again do what feels right for you.
Help others
Sharing other people’s posts, offering encouragement and commenting are all ways to get to know and help others. Commenting allows you to leave a link to your own site, which is a good way to drive some traffic to your site. However I would say again, try and be as genuine and real and write well thought out comments because you feel compelled to do so, not because you are looking for exposure yourself. People sense if someone is doing that and it can turn people off. Be real and offer value with all your online interactions.
Write great content
“Content is king” is something you will start to hear when you become a blogger and I would say it is very true. Obviously there are a lot of factors that influence how popular your blog will become. You can have the most amazing content but if you are not letting people know about it, then things won’t progress quickly so great content needs to be accompanied with getting your name out there. However fundamentally, great content goes a long way. Again be yourself, write from the heart and try and be fresh and original and offer value.

Great post Jen!
Seriously, I really like it. You make a lot of good points here that people should consider if they really want to make it out there.
Content is key is a big one and consistency and being real are all great but most importantly I think is deciding what you want to write about and being passionate.
I feel that when you write about something you love you will want to write more and as you get out there and do some other things to help grow your readership then your writing will start to pay off.
People will come to your blog but if they can tell you don’t care what you write about or they just aren’t interested then they’ll probably leave.
Having passion is great and if you can make money from it later, wonderful, if not, if you’re passionate about it, does it really matter?

Thanks Eric! You are spot on. Luckily my first blog has been about something I love (personal development and life coaching) and I can really see the wisdom in the advice to choose a topic you love …I really can’t imagine how hard it would be to continuously write about something that wasn’t a passion.
I am glad you enjoyed the post.

Writing about anything but what you love is crazy and it would get extremely difficult I would think.
It almost seems as if you can just fly through the clouds when you’re writing on a topic you love and it wouldn’t even seem like work half the time.

I enjoy blogging so much that I spend at least a few hours doing it most days and so far it’s never felt like work. I love how you describe writing about what you love Eric … it is like flying through the clouds isn’t it?!

Most days it is as I described and some days it isn’t. Every day its ups and downs for blogging in its own way.
Mainly, if you love what you talk about and you care enough to help others, to truly help others, things will find a way to work themselves out if you’re constantly looking at ways of improving things as you go.

Very straight forward and useful tips. When you set up a new blog, you need to have set of action plans and check lists. Try not to do all at the same time. Allocate time period for each tasks. This way, you won’t burnout and go long way.

Twitter was and still is great for me to get some fast traffic. I still don’t have that many followers like Nick ( I have around 1000 times less lol) but I still manage to get decent traffic every day considering that I currently get somewhere between 20-50 visits a day.

Jen,
I think you’re right on with all of these points. The “consistency” point is very interesting to me. It seems that the most successful bloggers are the ones who really know what they want out of their blog–they don’t feel the need to get out of their comfort zone and post too frequently. For this reason, their posts are sometimes a lot better than other bloggers posts.
Other people seem to be able to crank out great material every day and build an audience that way.

Great points Chris. I think one of the things that I find interesting (as you mention also) is the differences in how people approach blogging. If you have great content, not posting as frequently often works really well and a lot of people seem not to mind… it seems to add kudos to the posts when they are published. On the other hand, consistency is good too and has worked well for me in establishing my blog, as much for me as for the readers. I guess it’s finding our own balance between quality content and regular contact with our readers.
Thanks Chris.

Hi Jen,
Congratulations on your guest post here!!
What I hear you saying is “be your own blogger” – be yourself and run your show in a way that works for you – don’t just follow other people’s rule or do stuff you think you “should”. I’d completely endorse this.
Also, your point about commenting really spoke to me. What I love is when people come onto my – or other people’s – blog and say something that stimulates a real conversation. I think everyone gains from this!
Take care for now.

Great to see you here. It is great to guest post here, I am delighted.
I like what you got from the post, that is definitely something I feel strongly about. Being yourself and having your own mind around blogging is important. There is a great community and fantastic advice out there AND it important to listen to ourselves and what is right for us.
Commenting is a great way to stimulate conversation …just like your comment here, I have had new insights from it already!
Thanks as always.
