How Much Are The Ads On Your Blog Worth?
Advertising is my highest source of income at Site Sketch 101. In fact, I made nearly $150 last month from advertising and I’m hoping to move onward and upward.
I’m only going to continue attracting advertisers and sponsors for the site if I can continue to provide value. In other words, I have to make sure that I’m giving each advertiser their money’s worth.
You have to do the same thing. So to do this we have to ask ourselves this vital question, “How valuable are the ads on your blog?”
We have to answer that question honestly. We can’t answer it with that optimistic naivety that fuels wishful thinking. We will sell no ads…in fact, we will destroy our credibility as an online presence if we charge more than they are worth.
So how do we determine the real value of our ad placements on our sites? Check out these four factors to determine your ad values.
Traffic: How many people will see the ad?
The first, and perhaps the most important, factor to consider when figuring out the value of your ads is to look at your traffic. A site with one million visitors per day certainly has a lot more to offer than a site with one visitor per day.
Google makes millions per year through advertisements because they are the number one most visited website in the world. They are able to put ads in front of the eyes of millions of people…and that is worth something.
Placement: How hard will it be to find the ad?
A common term that you’ll hear a lot when you start diving into the world of online advertising is “above the fold.” Above the fold refers to the portion of the web page that is immediately viewable without having to scroll at all. It’s the part of your website that your visitors see as soon as they arrive. Anything that you have to scroll down to see is below the fold.
Ads that are placed above the fold are outrageously more valuable than those below it. The reason should be obvious. Because those are the ads that are going to be displayed to so many more people.
Size: How prominent will the ad be displayed?
Just the other day, Darren Rowse posted an article that described how he went from $35 per day to over $100 per day on a single ad unit simply by increasing it’s size. Check out his article here: Learn from My Mistake: Don’t Leave Money on the Table.
Darren tripled his clicks on a single ad unit by increasing it’s size. People who purchase ads on our sites know this principle. They know that if the ad is tiny, that they’re not going to get many visitors from it. The bigger the ad…the more it’s worth.
Competition: How many other ads are they up against?
If there is only one ad, it will get all of the clicks. If there are 20…well, then they have to divide those clicks among twenty ads. So the point here is that the less ads you stick on your pages, the higher the value of each one.
Don’t overwhelm your site with ads. This will reduce the value of each one and it will reduce the quality of the experience at your site which will cause you to lose repeat visitors and reduce the value of your ads even further.

What other factors can you think of? Are you selling any ads on your site right now? If so, how much are you getting for them? What advice would you give to others who are trying to improve their ad sales?

I just started to put adsense to my blog and so far for about 2 weeks I only get about $5 worth of clicks.
this article will surely help us all in maximizing to monetize our blogs. Thanks for sharing Nick.

ZXT $5 for two weeks it’s not bad, in fact it’s really good. Besides, you just started using it. I don’t know yet but I think I will not put adsense on my blog. Thanks for sharing your results, it’s been very helpful.

Great post. I don’t have any ads on my site right now, but I may in the future. If I do, I’ll be sure to remember these tips.
While more people might see and ad that is above the fold, I think that an ad closer to the bottom of the page can possibly get more clicks. If the ad is for something related to the content, people who are actually interested in the content and read through it might click on it. It’s sort of like adding a related posts section to a blog.
I actually have no idea if this is true or not, but it’s just an idea.

Eric Bannatyne –> Good. Just don’t jump in charging $500 per ad unit because you think your site is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I see sites do this and they go a long time with zero income. Charge a reasonable price and slowly increase it as the site grows.

Your blog is doing better and better Nick, soon you’ll get $500 income from it.

ZXT –> I certainly hope so. I’m looking forward to the day that I can simply quit my job. That will be soooo nice.

Dana@Online Knowledge –> Traffic is incredibly important. Traffic takes time to build and often times brand new bloggers get discouraged when they can’t sell the same amount of advertising that the larger blogs are able to sell. We’ve got to build traffic and followers and then we can increase our ad sales.

This is a difficult question and I often get questions about it. People wondering how much they should charge for a specific ad on their site.
The best suggestion I can give is to check out your competition. If 8/10 people within your niche with about the same amount of visitors charge x dollar you should also start there. If there are a lot of people wanting yo buy, you should raise it one step at a time.

Nicholas, you are absolute right.
I’m surprised at how much you are charging your ads compared with other blogs with similar stats. Your blog is a good opportunity for advertisers.
Why did you choose SellBuyAds? Are you satisfied with the service provided?
I think that if I want to sell ads on my blog I should change the theme. But it’s too soon to think about it.
Good post Nicholas, I needed to know more about selling ads.

David | ilcantone.com –> I like the BuySellAds because I have seen them on some other blogs that I highly respect. I charge much less than some of my competition because I’m still in a growing pattern and I don’t want to run my advertisers away. I think that if I start low and gradually move higher I will make the most of it.

Totally true! In my experience with making money from advertising, its easy to notice the trend that advertisers would love to advertise on a site that doesn’t have that much ad regardless of the traffic..
Everytime my blog is loaded with a ton of ads, some advertisers dont renew anymore and they tell me they would come back when the other private placements are gone as well..

Any way, I am happy that Nick is making a good income from his blog and I hope to see it improve a lot more than what it is now.

Well, at this stage I have a 728×90 ad space above my entire site and hope to get a few advertisers for that. I think my pricing is right.
I also have some in the sidebar which can be seen without scrolling.
I must admit that I am still experimenting with buysellads, need to see if it is worth it or not.

Im using adsense at my blogs. And for me, proper adsense placement/optimization is the key to success. Also, adsense cpc depends on the niche of your blog. So, from the very beginning, choose your keywords wisely (choose high paying keywords) for you to gain higher income with adsense ads.
Note: Of course quality traffic and search engine presence is essential.

Ron Boracay –> I hate focusing my keywords on my ads, though. I want to write articles that people want to read and not articles that are going to make me an extra 12 cents per click. I find that many people who focus on keywords end up losing so many readers that there is no one left to click on the more expensive ads. Those who focus on their readers have so many visitors that they make more in the shear bulk of people who are there to click.

Your point about being above the fold is key. Many publishers don’t realize this so all their ad blocks are below the fold and they don’t know why no one is buying the ad blocks.
Another thing to consider is what and how many pages the ad appears on. Although the home page may sound great for some sites, there are times when landing pages are more heavily traveled.
Additionally, as an advertiser, I couldn’t imaging having the home page and not the post pages.

Dave Doolin | Website In A Weekend –> I’m a huge supporter of complete transparency. I want to make money on this site from ads, but I want to do it by providing a terrific value. If I ask for $5 then I hope that I can provide $20 worth of value for the purchase. Also, I’m not going to beat people into making a purchase. I’m just going to work to create great value, put the information out there for people to see and then sit back and let people make up their own minds. It may be a bold move to put my numbers out there, but I want people to know exactly where I’m coming from.

I just launched my blog today, and to be honest, all this “Adsense” is confusing to me. I would love to make a few bucks, but have no idea where to start, or what service to use.
I am registered with Google Adsense and have a banner designed, but all the “per-click” information makes my head spin.
Any suggestions where to begin?
Kind Regards,

Bryan Zimmerman –> First, if you’re just launching a blog, don’t worry about it too much. Even highly successful blogs don’t make very much from Adsense during the first few months. Take your time. Second, I noticed that your email is a gmail account. You should hit me up on Google Talk and ask me any questions that you have and I will be more than happy to spend some one-on-one time explaining anything that you have questions about.
