3 Powerful Laws of Getting & Keeping Visitors
Awesome Content: Set Up For Online SuccessThere are few things in life as relaxing and as enjoyable as Christmas leave for me. My two brothers, my sister and our families moved back into our parents house for a week and half of holiday celebrations.
We laughed like hyenas. We broke the buzzer on the Taboo game. We gorged ourselves with turkey, ham, stuffing and biscuits. And then we gorged ourselves with leftover turkey, ham, stuffing and biscuits.
I even made it successfully all the way through several days without ever changing out of my brand new fleece superman pajamas. They’re so comfortable. If you saw them then you’d understand.
The Intangible Value of Relationships
But as I lounged around, slept in, and wrestled with my brother and his kids, I began to realize that the time we were having together had real value. In fact, it was so valuable to me that I was willing to drive for 15 hours from Washington DC to northern Illinois. It was worth spending $10o dollars in gas and nearly $40 in tolls and then spending the same on the return trip.
I can’t place a number on it. In fact, I feel like the amount I spent was incredibly cheap compared to the value that I got from being there. I don’t know exactly how much I’d be willing to spend to do it again next year. But I know that it would take a lot to stop me.
Those times and those experiences are valuable. There’s an intangible price that we all place on connections and relationships. And it’s important to recognize that as we work to provide value at our websites.
I’ve come to believe that there are three primary reasons that people are exploring the internet and two of them are directly related to the value I experienced on Christmas break.
As you look at these three areas, I don’t want you to sit back and think about which category you are the strongest but rather figure out how you can build strength from all three of these areas. Success won’t come from power-housing in any one of these categories. You need to work to build strength in all three.
- Education: Many visitors, especially those coming from search engines, are looking for information on specific topics. They want guides that explain how to do something in a way that is quick and easy to understand. They want to be educated on a particular skill or on a particular bit of knowledge. Wikipedia is a perfect example of a site that appeals to users seeking knowledge.
- Entertainment: Many users browse the internet simply to pass the time, to amuse themselves, or to find something to make them laugh. Many television networks are now broadcasting their programming across the internet to draw in this group of online traffic. Youtube is an amazingly popular example of a site that appeals to entertainment focused users.
- Engagement: With the advent of social media like Twitter, MySpace and Facebook, there is ever growing demographic of users online who are searching for ways to connect and engage with other people. People are drawn to sites where the authors respond to readers questions and comments.
Group Reflection:
First, I want to know which of the areas you are delivering the most effectively to your site’s visitors. Which area are you putting the most effort into?
Second, I want to know some specific ideas for how you can improve in the other areas where you are the weakest. What are some actions that you can do right now to make your site appeal to more people with these three principles in mind?

Great post, love the story you opened up with, and love how you made the connection between the value we get in personal relationships with people we love, and online relationships with sites we “love”
Looking back at feedgrids.com after reading your post, I can see areas that we can work on.
Because of the nature of our site, I believe that we have a lot of educational content already because of all the great feeds we are pulling in from sites like yours, and also a good amount of entertainment in our inspirational section, but there is always room for improvement.
One way that we can add more value and education is to offer a lot more of our own posts. I think by sharing our knowledge and experience in design, and user experience we can build a better relationship and trust with our users.
The one category that I think is lacking would be engagement. But, we are always working on ways to improve the social interaction on the site, and encourage user involvement.
We are a new site so there is plenty of work to be done that’s for sure!
Great post Nicholas, thanks a lot!

As always, an excellent post. These are some important things to think about.
I guess I try to focus on the area of education, because I love writing tutorials, and people looking for tutorials will generally want to learn something
Engagement is also very important. I usually enjoy answering questions from readers, and it also shows that you’re willing to do a bit extra to help people out.

Nick,
I am a big believer in the “engagement” part, and I try to respond to most of the comments on my site, I also try to visit and comment on the site my commentators own.
The entertainment and education I believe I can improve on, I recently added “Sunday Funny’s” (like the funny papers we used to read as kids) and I put random funny videos up on Sundays just to break up my writing and inject a little humor.
Education is one I think we all struggle with, I try to share my opinions and experiences, but they are just that, mine. I do research and try to cite resources as well.

No doubt, I love spending time with my family, to have a talk and laugh. I’m working in another state of my country, so I’ll be going home in 3-4 months or longer once.
I used to reply every comments left on my blog, I love interacting with readers and leaving comments on others’ blog as well. I believe that this takes the larger part as everyone likes their comment to be replied by the blog owner. When they know their questions will be answered, they will return and ask again.
Now, I try to make my blog to be more education, sometimes I’m out of idea but I’m trying to read more and learn. Knowledge and experience is very important to come out with new blog post idea.
Cheers,
Lee

Well, I would consider myself to be mostly concentrated around education side of my blog. I have a few tips to say to my visitors, and I present them.
I’ve tried a few amusing posts, and I definitely engage a little, but I should really work more on this side, as building relationships is even stronger than visitors from search engines.

My site might is clearly running in the 2 first categories.
The main aim is to help people interested in web design find new resources and perfect their skills in the field. Then I found out that people also wanted to be entertained, that is why I started a chronicles section and it got a nice response from my readership.
There’s still hiccups on the engagement level as people don’t really ask questions but I do respond to nearly all the comments.
I think that one way of improving things for my site is to post even more educational-specific content with simpler concepts to attract more visitor involvement.

Great post! This is a great simple list. So many times we ‘forget what we are here for’ or just don’t really look at we are actually doing (in spite of our intentions:)

I post a lot of content to educate on my blog. It occurred to me late last year to think about how I want people to feel (based on Maya Angelou’s quote: people will forget what you say and forget what you do, but they will never forget how you make them feel)
I realized that I wanted to educate to help people to feel confident and empowered.
That created a shift in how I post. I now make an effort to make sure that I post in such a way that doesn’t overwhelm or make people feel dumb!
I never would intentionally anyway, but that extra little focus makes a big difference in the value that is provided (IMHO:)
Now to look at the entertainment part…

HeatherO » You have exactly the right attitude. And if I can bounce a related quote back at you, it’s important to remember that “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” It really is all about how we present it. People pay attention to how we interact with them and how we write to them.
