Enhance Your Design to Grow Your Business

Our host today is Ben Johnson. If you're interested in getting in front of the readers of Site Sketch 101, check out our guest posting invitation here.

Why do you want to create a business website? The obvious answer is to make money online. However, creating a mere web design won’t be enough unless it looks professional and your market can see it.

To ensure that you succeed online, your web design must depict professionalism and it must be accessible by your market especially when they are actually searching for your services. This is the ultimate way of winning the trust of your market and growing your business.

So, how should you create your web design? Well, here are some powerful techniques that will allow you to create a winning web design.

Explore Your Competitors

Research and development is an important part of every business, because it helps you determine what steps you should take to effectively compete in today’s tough business world. It is also important when you are ready to create your business website.

You need to see how your competitors have created their presence online. The purpose of this exercise is not to copy anything, but rather to determine how you can come up with a better and more effective design.

Create Your Strategy

Once you go through the designs of several competitors, you now need to sit down with your designer and discuss how you can beat them in terms of professionalism and elegance. Your audience won’t be able to see you physically, so you will need to create an engaging atmosphere/design that will make them stay on your site.

If your target market will realize (after visiting your site) that they will get what they are looking for, they will surely spend some time on your site and eventually become your customers. Hence, quality design with quality content along with strategic placement of content will help you win the trust of your market.

Write and Organize Your Content Nicely

Now, as your content (along with the design) will help you win the trust of your market, you need to ensure that your content is powerful, benefit-oriented as well as visible. There is no need to hide your most powerful punch lines somewhere down. Make them visible to grab the attention of your market. Ensure that your copy can engage your visitors and eventually convert them into customers.

Create Simple Site Navigation

Make it easy for your visitors to browse your website. You must have come across dozens of websites where you felt lost due to excessive links all over the page. Don’t give the same feeling to your target audience because it can put anyone off. It’s not good to make it difficult for people to find your products. You need to make their lives as easy as possible.

Be Found Online with Your SEO-friendly Site

All the factors that we have discussed above will be useless, if your market is unable to find you. One of the best ways to reach your market is through search engines. If you reach them – right when they search for your products – your chances of converting them will increase significantly. So, ensure that you create an SEO friendly site to increase your visibility in search engines.

So, folks, based on experience, these are some powerful tips that will allow you to create an effective web design and grow your business.

You are definitley right about design makeing a big difference in being able to grow a website. I am speaking more of graphic design and not just the other factors that you mentioned in the article.

The truth of the matter is that you can take a website with exceptionally high quality content and bury it because people are instantly turned off by your website’s design.

Conversely, you can take a website with much lower value content and get more readers to that content simply because your design gives them an impression that you know what you are talking about.

Professionalism is easily faked by having an exceptional design. (not that people should do that) Eventually people will see through it. But, it will work for first time visitors.

That is proof enough that design makes a big difference.

Today what sells is a good design, that is lighter to load in browser, easy to use, and distinct. Internet is flooded with so many websites and most of them follow the same pattern, others that tries to be different in design got beaten in terms of usability, so usability as well as attractive designs make a website or a web business successful.

When you’re researching your competitors don’t forget to note things that you believe your website can do better.

One of the biggest things is navigation – ask yourself “could I make it simpler?”

Other than that, yeah, definitely try to be as professional as possible but unique enough to stand out.

I agree! What’s so great about this post is that I’m currently being taught how to ‘play’ just a little in DreamWeaver for school. We’ll design sites more heavily in coming months, but there’s a product I’m promoting and preparing to drop ship, and I need a really clean, professional look.

After playing with templates, I realize I just don’t know how to start from scratch- either that or I lack patience — and I say that because playing with templates is HARD enough!

    LOL… thanks for these tips!

I think content’s a pretty useful thing too unless what you’re selling will bring people back without Any effort. Having said that, these are all good key points. Know competitors, know how to pitch yourself, and keep it simple!

Ya, you are right, playing with the templates is the boring job, if you want to create some thing new.
These templates has many limitations, but I would say the professionals who design these templates they always try to keep the standards of navigations specially wordpress plugins, but good to hear that you are trying to work on Dreamweaver b’cause with these kind of developing tools you won’t get limitation, you will produce your own format according to your desired layout.

But I strongly agrees with @Murlu, you have to put your creativity but always try to follow the trends and fashions of web 2.0, so people would love navigating your site.

@Micheal yes, content is important as well, but nobody will read your content until he gets the positive first impression from your website, reading and navigating contents will be his next step.

Hi Ben, great to see that you’re a logo designer as I think the foundation of good branding on and offline is a strong logo. If you haven’t got that you’re in trouble. If all people can but is a logo then that’s what they should get and keep the web design itself simple to let the logo shine.

Great tips and thanks for the intro Nick:)

Dennis it depends on what you are selling or on what cause you are running your website. Contents and causes are important as well, Like if you are providing any unique information to the reader you will definitely get significant traffic regardless of how pathetic your website design is. Like you have a unique news like Micheal Jackson died last night :) or because of the website SEO your ranking is high in Google, in these cases any website can get any kind of traffic. But even then always see the bounce rate or the time spent on the website. It can’t be good without an attractive web design and user-friendly navigation.
