How To Really Cash In On Guest Posts
Our host today is Frank Angelone. If you're interested in getting in front of the readers of Site Sketch 101, check out our guest posting invitation here.
1. The Mistake Made…
I’m guessing you just finish crafting that outstanding guest post to be published on a high profile blog, but once its published…what are you going to do next? Is it just going to sit there while the comments come in from readers and there’s no activity from you, the writer? I see it occur way too often.
You get these bloggers who want to build readership and relationships with new people, but they forget the best way to do that. INTERACT!
Just because you write a guest post doesn’t guarantee traffic to be brought back to your blog. You need to look at the guest post as a building block for the traffic. Once the guest post has been published and the comments start to come in, that should be your que to respond to EVERY comment.
Not just one…all of them!
The more people you respond to, the greater chance you have for building more readers back to your blog, building meaningful relationships with new people, and creating opportunities for these new readers to take an interest in what you do.
2. Getting Over The Hump…
The hump that many new bloggers need to overcome is the subscriber count to their blog. This honestly means nothing in the short run. This is a long term goal you should set for yourself as motivation.
In the beginning stages of blogging, you should guest post as often as you can. It’s the best way to build credibility, back links, and relationships with new readers. The back link to your blog means nothing if you forget to show your appreciation to your new readers. If they’re going to return, you need to contribute to the conversation. This is something Nicholas and myself, as well as many other bloggers believe in.
The hump is more than a silly subscriber count number…it’s recognizing those individuals who truly appreciate what you are doing and building a community around them.
Forget the large audience and thousands of subscribers. If you have a core group of 15 active people on your blog who you interact with daily, that’s the main thing. When you guest post, you give yourself the possibility of adding 1-2 new readers to your community as long as you recognize them and treat them like the 15 active readers on your blog currently. That’s how you get over the hump and reach thousands of subscribers.
When you take the time to reach out to people, they will notice and thats how guest posting helps to build a large audience. You need to start off on the ground floor like everything else and slowly the numbers grow.
3. Do You Know The Owner Of The Blog You’re Guest Posting For?
Here’s something I’m sure most people don’t even take into consideration. If you’re going to guest post for a popular blog or an elite blog, it’s important to build a relationship with the owner of the blog first. Now, I’m not saying you need to know each other directly, but at least talk with them before hand via email.
For example, I noticed that Nicholas accepted guest posts on his blog. When I noticed that, I didn’t ask him to guest post right away. I looked at some of his posts and took a glance at what his community was about. I wanted to see if I could fit in. Nicholas does give people the opportunity to submit your guest post to him right away, but I chose not to do that. Instead, I contacted him and let him know of my post idea. I also reminded him about another guest post I wrote on a different blog and thanked him for commenting on it.
It was at that point I asked if I could write a guest post on his site. This is how you should go about trying to guest post for well known blogs to build your credibility and relationships with well known bloggers. They don’t want to be viewed as just an “object” to post back links on their site. They want to know you’re serious about the guest post and that you are going to bring some value to the table.
4. The Guest Post Is A Work In Progress…
Why is the guest post a work in progress? Well, even after the post has been posted, the comments are shared, and you’ve interacted…now you’ve opened more possibilities for yourself. The owner of the blog feels more comfortable talking with you as now you’re not just another “Joe Schmoe,” and they’ll be more willing to work with you in the future.
Just think, you’re on Twitter and you see these well known bloggers interacting with each other, but when you try to interact with them, they may not respond to you. It may not be because they don’t care for what you have to say, but it may have to do with the relationship you have with them. From this guest post alone, I’m sure Nicholas and I will continue to interact and share what each other is up to. All this simply from a guest blog post.
How? Like I said, the guest post is a building block for building relationships…it’s not always about numbers! You’re popularity will build through word-of-mouth and by how well you interact with others. Waiting for the readers to come will not happen. Like anything in this life…you need to go out and go after what you want.
5. What Can You Take Away From All Of This?
- It starts with the guest post and ends with meaningful relationships
- Its about what you do after the guest post that really matters. Anyone can write an article, but communicating with others is not something many do well.
- Traffic to your blog from a guest post is great, but if the readers don’t view you as someone who cares what their opinion is…your guest post was a waste.
All I can hope is that I provided you all with a different look at the powerful ways to cash in on guest posting and that its more than an article. However, I can be completely wrong. If you disagree with me, I’d like to know and talk with you. So tell me, what are your thoughts?

What a unique concept for guest posting there Frank! I did get a lot of valuable lesson here, particularly with relationship building through commenting back to your guest posts’ comments. I admit that I don’t do that (sometimes), since my main intention was the link that I can get from them. I’ve done several guest posts to elite blogs out there and I didn’t bother to check what was happening there after it got published. This post definitely changed my perceptions about guest blogging, it became more powerful in my point of view.

I think most people write guest posts for the link back to your blog. However, if the content you provide in that guest post isn’t valuable, then those readers are never actually going to click that link! I’m glad I helped with providing a new perspective.

Nice WriteupFrank,I totally agree with you that guest post is all about building relations with other bloggers, it’s the best way to know like-minded bloggers. Replying to comments is very important when you are serious in building relationship, otherwise guest post is of no use. Guest posting is not worth just for getting backlinks.

You’re right! The guest post helps build relationships and connections with other readers that may not be reading your blog. Through guest posting and responding to their comments, you give them reason to want to check out your site. Its always important to make sure everything is genuine.

Well said. There is no point in guest posting just to get a back link. You can do that in many other ways too. Building a relationship with the owner of the blog, is the most useful.

I totally agree about responding to ALL comments. I accept guest posts and so many times I have to remind the writer to come back and respond.
If they don’t…they never get a second guest post on my blog!

I do notice that most people don’t respond to comments on their guest posts. I was never really sure why, but in reality it makes sense. They’re after the link back to their site. That’s understandable, but they need to remember that people comment to have conversations. They want a response back.

You hit the nail on the head. I feel credibility is the key word here. You can write so many guest posts, but unless you are interacting with those people who have left comments, those readers will think you’re just trying to take traffic away from another site.

Hi Frank,
This is a very interesting post!
I believe that when anyone guest posts, they should make it their duty to respond to all comments. This has happened to me and I was quite disappointed.
Like Andrew, said when this has happened to him, they don’t guest post anymore on his blog. It think that is a good policy to have.
I think it should be common sense to return and respond to all comments, because the guest wrote the post, but some people for whatever reason feel they don’t need to return. They have the back link, but that comes off as being quite selfish. Which is a total turn off for me.
It is also important to know the person or have some kind of relationship prior to guest posting.
Thanks for sharing your tips, very helpful!

There are a lot of people guest posting that for some reason they feel they don’t need to respond to comments left on their guest post. I think your point is very valid. They have the guest post, so why hang around? They just don’t realize that in the long run, they are hurting themselves.

You make a good point here, Frank.
Guest posting is just a block that you build in order to get what you really want out of your blogging adventure which is building a relationship with others and interacting and learning from and sharing so that things get stronger and the community is massively impacted by everyone’s input.
If you just go around guest posting and just building up your own blogs content and you’re not interacting with others and really forming relationships that go somewhere, you may as well quit and not worry about blogging.
Or is that being a bit too harsh?
Frank said:
Everyone does want to build traffic, readership, and connections on their own blog. However, you’re right there are some people who don’t interact or form relationships. As to whether or not these people should quit blogging…I think it all depends on what they’re trying to get out of blogging in the first place. Don’t you think? Some may not be in it for the relationships or connecting with others and sharing information.

Great tips here. Being a guest poster here on SiteSketch101 I have found that there is a very loyal audience here that takes the time to read and comment. Common courtesy is to answer them and not leave it to Nick.
I wish people would just stop chasing the traffic. yes the numbers are great do not get me wrong but having 10K visitors a day that click a link, skim and tweet is nice to show off and definitely strokes the ego by there is nothing substantial to that. You want traffic, read and comment on blogs, talk to people —-> earn it.
I see too many times where people are asking how to bring in traffic to their blog. Content of course but my 2nd response is how involved are you in your industry’s community. *crickets* Wow, you want people to come and read your blog and are not doing your part to read and comment elsewhere? Cringes.
I would also add that when you are guest posting and people comment take a lil extra step and see if they have a blog, visit it and if you can (please do not force it) comment and share you thoughts. That is how we start to build relationships.

Suzanne,
I must say this was a wonderful in depth response. I really appreciate the interaction a lot!
Its so true, most people are looking for that one time 100,000 views on one post and then after that everything settles back to normal. Well, like you said, and I agree – no true relationships. The people that keep coming back to your blog – they are the ones you have developed a relationship with. That’s what matters most because when other potential readers see those conversations, they will recognize that “this community” is worth being apart of.
I think you touched on another great point. Checking out the blogs of those that left you a comment is always a good idea! You’re returning the favor and by leaving them a comment on their post, you’re showing you care and want to continue to engage with them. I checked out your site after I read this comment!

Superb tips Frank. This is how to do guest blogging or posting at the right way. Guest posting or blogging is not a set and forget thing, it’s like an ongoing cycle, wherein, at the end, it can be really beneficial to the guest poster or blogger. Two thumbs up for this one.

I have to say guest posting does sound scary overall, but posts like this really simplify at least the way you look at it.
I am not totally sure that a blogger should focus too much on guest posting straight away, but I definitely agree it’s an awesome way to build up on your personal community of bloggers, and to confront with new minds and with a way of seeings things different than your own.
