Are You Playing For An Audience of None?

Our host today is Kiesha Easley. If you're interested in getting in front of the readers of Site Sketch 101, check out our guest posting invitation here.

I went for a mind-release walk downtown the other day – the kind with no company and no music – just me and my thoughts. As I was making my way back, I noticed a guy standing outside playing his saxophone to an audience of none, that is, until another guy and I walked up for a listen.

His music filled the wind and made me feel sorry that I hadn’t brought my wallet so I could tip him, because not only did his music brighten my day, making my walk more entertaining than I had expected, his enthusiasm also made me think.

Blogging is like playing music in the streets

Everyday that I blog, it’s like I’m pulling out my horn in the street (I’m sorry this sentence has me cracking up for the wrong reasons), hoping that someone big walks by and leaves me a huge tip (an affiliate sale or ad space rental) or decides that my talents are too great to be wasted and decides to hire me for a full-time blogging gig.

Blogging for an unseen crowd of people is not much different from what this poor guy was doing that afternoon. He was showcasing his talent, hoping someone would take notice. On a good day, it could be very lucrative for him, but on a bad day, an empty tip jar could leave him feeling as if his hard work and efforts are being completely wasted.

Have you ever felt like you were playing for an audience of none?

Does an empty tip jar mean you totally suck or that you simply need to pick up your gear and get to a better location? The answer of course, is complex. In this guy’s case, he had talent, but was in the wrong city. If he did the same exact thing in Chicago or some other big city, where live jazz might be more appreciated, he might actually rake in more than he could carry. But getting there might be a challenge for him, especially if he has no money to fund the trip. If he’s adventurous, he could, hitch-hike a ride, perhaps.

Many bloggers are in the same predicament, blogging in the wrong places. A new blog, that showcases awesome content runs the risk of playing to an audience of none, leaving you with an empty tip jar everyday. The solution is the same, get to a better location!

Hitchhike your way to a better place by guest posting. There are tons of sites that are accepting guest posts that will help bloggers get their talents noticed. The great news for bloggers, is that they don’t have to try to flood the big cities (i.e. the A list blogs). There’s tons other blogs all over that are less flooded with guest post inquiries.

We Blog Better is currently accepting quality original guest posts, but there are many others, such as Fuel Your Blogging, and of course this blog – just to name a few.

If you’re a talented blogger, you’ve just got to find the right corner in the right city to blow your horn. Instead of playing your horn for an audience of none, you’ll be playing for a crowd many and maybe even have them dancing in the street.

Great connection you made between the saxophone player and those who are blogging.

I agree that guest posting can really help build your audience up quicker, but there are also a few other things I recommend (of course, assuming there is high quality content being posted to the blog regularly):

    - Make a list of blogs in your niche, create a folder in your feed reader, and comment whenever each one of those blogs makes a new update.

    - Unless it is an announcement post, make an effort to promote your individual posts… don’t just publish and let them sit there! Social bookmark the post to a handful (I’d say about 25 sites or so), submit it to blog carnivals, announce it on Twitter a few times throughout the day, etc.

If you do those things along with guest posting… you won’t have to worry about blogging for an “audience of none” for very long :)

Also, don’t be afraid to approach the authorities in your niche for guest blogging opportunities… what’s the worst they could say? No? But at best, they can approve your post and allow you to get an enormous amount of exposure.

Just my two cents. Great post!

Guest blog posting is one of the most effective way of making your self and your blog stand out of the crowd. Or let me say, to get noticed by the crowd.

Aside from blog commenting, blog posting really creates this kind of great communication and atmosphere. We never know who might read our blog post or comments. It might be a big boss of a big company that may hire you to blog for their 5 star company.

Nice article Kiesha! (Nice name too!) =)

    Hi,

Great comparison you made there with the saxophone player.

I read on Problogger (I saw your comment too, I think) about comparing to real life examples/current events. These always work great.

Great motivation you give there, my comparing it to a real life example. You see, we relate more and understand more if we can actually imagine/picture a situation, just like you have done in this post!

Great analogy. Just have to put your soul into your work and then have a little luck. I’m putting a tip in your jar. Thanks for the visual image and inspiration.

Keisha, You are right! I think sometimesit is so difficult to get some tips for your work.

The only problem with bloggers that their business sense is usually not good but there content is quality.

What they learn in their blogging journey is the ability to make more money or find more customers for their services.

They get better and better and then they become A-list bloggers

Wow. I impressed on how you relate the real situation with the importance of making yourself visible to the online world.

And yep, some bloggers tend to wait for audience to come and plus they’re keep waiting in the wrong place.

The best way is to find the audience and give your best shot. They’ll notice you in no matter of time! :D

Oh you hit the heart on this one; a most awesome analogy. I’m from Long Island, and used to hang out in Manhattan on a regular basis…..park/street/subway music everywhere!

Once my blog network is set and running, I too will be both accepting guests and hoping to guest myself, as often as possible!. :)

Keisha, thanks for a beautifully written analogy! Surely there are times I’ve felt I’m playing to an audience of none. However, I try not to let it discourage me and I keep on plodding.
Of course we’d all like to make tons of moola with our blogs and websites, but sometimes having a full “tip jar” isn’t the only goal.

I get a real kick out of designing web pages (though I’m a bit of a rebel), as I’m sure you get a lot of personal satisfaction when you know you’ve written a good piece. And musicians, probably the worst of the lot! I’ve known so many who are so passionate about their art that they don’t even consider the tip jar. They do it “for the music”, like they have a calling.
Of course we’d all love to make a living at what we love to do, but sometimes, the personal satisfaction is enough!
That said, now go and buy something from my website :-P

Again, thanks for the piece. You really made me stop and think, and for a writer, that can’t be bad!

    Hi, Kiesha
You have a way with words that I envy. I could see your saxophone example in my minds eye, because its a scene that touched me when you said you wished you had brought your wallet.

Awesome way to take a story and relate it to something unusual.

      Hi Gurl!
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed this post.
I really try to put my heart into what I’m writing – I immerse myself and because of that, I’m able to immerse the reader – it takes a lot out of me sometimes, but it’s truly worth it. Don’t be afraid to shape your writing into exactly what you want it to be, too. Do that and you’ll have people envying your writing as well.

Many small blogs are providing great content for no one to see but some of the big ones are providing rubbish for all to see.

There are really great infos in this post and I also vouch for guest posting, it is the ultimate blog marketing tip.

Thanks a lot for the great post,
