All true, and I really love that phrase “user first, search engine second”. Users like simple website designs where they can easily see things and everything is in order, we really don’t need fancy looking sites to enjoy one. Also our SEO should be focused on getting specific traffic that we want.

“Each page on your website should be reachable through one link”. Hopefully this means a single URL rather than one location (e.g. main nav). Otherwise you’d have no serendipitous browsing or calls to action.

Not an easy task, but if you work close enough with your client, you can help them build a site that looks great and meets SEO needs.
