The 15 Best WordPress Plugins to Use in 2011

One of the reasons that I’m so madly in love with WordPress is the thousands of plugins available. It doesn’t matter what you want to accomplish on your blog, there is probably a WordPress plugin that will allow you to do it.

This list is the 15 most incredible WordPress plugins. Only the 15 best WordPress plugins have made it while anything less than amazing has been kicked to the street. Only 5 plugins survived last year’s listing to be returned this year. The rest are fresh to this year.

Each of these WordPress plugins are used at Site Sketch 101 and I personally recommend each of them to you. The following plugins are posted in the order that I recommend them.

The 15 Best WordPress Plugins to Use in 2011

  1. W3 Total Cache – This WordPress plugin is great for two reasons.  First, it makes your pages load way faster.  Second, since it stores static versions of your site, it requires much less CPU processing than using WordPress all by itself. This WordPress plugin is number one on the list for a reason.
  2. HeadSpace: WordPress SEO Made Simple- Move over All in one SEO. There’s a new guy in town. HeadSpace provides you with the features you need to drive your site to the top.  People spend way to much time working on SEO and too little time writing great content.  This plugin let’s you put your focus back where it belongs.  It takes care of all the SEO work that your blog will need.
  3. Gravity Forms – This is without question the best WordPress plugin for forms. There is no competition. This form creates posts, allows image and media uploads, allows conditional logic, and so much more. It is the all-in-one form plugin for WordPress.
  4. MaxBlog Press Affiliate Ninja – This WordPress plugin is amazing as it massively cuts down on the amount of time it takes to promote affiliate products throughout your site. It converts keywords that you identify, tracks clicks, and much more. You won’t have to keep chasing down your affiliate links when they’re all stored in your WordPress dashboard and doing the work for you.
  5. WP-DBManager – This little gem is amazing for backing up your website. It actually has quite a few functions that it can perform but perhaps it’s most impressive feature is it’s ability to email the entire WordPress databse to me every day.
  6. Thank Me Later – This plugin is great.  It sends an email to all first-time visitors.  You can write up the email to remind them about your RSS feed or just to invite them to connect with you personally.  I do both.
  7. WP-PageNavi – Those ‘Older Posts’ and ‘Newer Posts’ links are boring.  With WP-PaveNavi you can get page buttons so users can go directly to whichever page they want.  Plus they look a lot better than plain little links.
  8. SEO Smart Links – Do you inter-link your articles?  You should.  Linking within an article to other articles is a great way to build Page Rank throughout your site and it’s a great way to get readers to find your other articles on similar subjects.  This plugin will interlink keywords to your other articles for you.
  9. Digg Digg Social Sharing – This simply WordPress plugin is what powers the floating social icons to the left of each post here at Site Sketch 101. With an easy to access Twitter icon, your friends and readers will be able to easily share and promote your content.
  10. Feedburner Circulation – The era of the feedburner chicklets are over. Install the Feedburner Circulation WordPress plugin and you’ll be able to display your subscriber count just as you see in the top right corner of this page.
  11. Revision Control – With the revisions feature of WordPress, it doesn’t take long for your database to get bloated and begin slowing down your site. With the Revision Control WordPress Plugin you can limit the number of post revisions that remain in storage. I have mine set to 2.
  12. Tweet Old Post – If you’ve been engaging and building a community of friends on Twitter, then this WordPress plugin is the perfect way to sprinkle your posts into your tweets. It has options to add hashtags, leading text and more.
  13. Widget Context – With the Widget Context WordPress plugin, you’ll be able to pick and choose which pages you want sidebar widgets to appear on. You can literally create different sidebars for different pages and sections of your site with this.
  14. WordPress Editorial Calendar – This plugin provides a crisp, clean editorial calendar of your posts both past and present. You can drag and drop articles from one date to another, edit them and much more. This is an amazing organizational tool.
  15. ReplyMe – This plugin sends an email to anyone who leaves a comment only when someone comments as a direct response to them. This is a terrific way to help continue the conversations that you’re working to build on your site.

Bonus: Pop Up Domination – Popup Domination is the absolute best WordPress plugin in existence today for capturing leads. It’s loaded with different themes and theme option to match the look and feel of your site and I’m telling you that there are absolutely no popup software available that compares to the style and effectiveness of Popup Domination.

Special Note: I don’t like popups, but I can’t argue with how incredibly effective this one is for rapidly building a massive list. If you’re going to use one then popup domination is the best WordPress plugin in the industry.

Group Discussion

WordPress plugins are amazing little creations. In a matter of just seconds you can bring new realms of possibilities to your website.

Which WordPress plugins do you use on your site and how many plugins do you use at your site?  Do you use any of these plugins?  Do you have any other WordPress plugins that you would highly recommend to the group here?

I use some of these and after this post, I will probably use more of them.

I can’t seem to get the cache plugin to work. At least this is how it looks to me. I says it is working but I can’t see any improvements with my blog’s speed.

Hope you will do some tutorials for these plugins for us non-techie types.

I noticed that after the last Digg Digg update I lost the Stumble Upon button, what happened there?

Thanks for the list, I will put it to good use.

I’ll be glad to put together some tutorials. I’m not sure what to say about that Digg Digg issue as I just updated mine this morning and my StumbleUpon button is still intact.

An alternative to W3 Total Cache is WP Super Cache. It’s actually much easier to use and as such you’ll see the improvements much easier. However, W3 Total Cache, the plugin that I recommended above, provides lots of additional cache options that WP Super Cache doesn’t touch.

My favorite feature of this one is it’s ability to interface with Amazon S3 and move your large files onto the Amazon CloudFront network which drastically speeds up a site for people trying to access it from the other side of the world.

#7 is not true, just because most ‘free templates’ have delete this basic ‘forward + backward’ navi. will not tell me it’s boring..
Is designing your theme all gone?

I hate having 500 plugins in my WP site doing just a very small feature to my site, and every time i log-in to my admin i have to update at least one plugin.

I think we need to learn to keep things simple or less on plugins, WP is a great tool to build your website-/blog but we should not drive to much on it.. Before you know you can’t see what your doing around your site because all the plugins.

Keep it clean, only use plugins if you can’t code it yourself or if it’s a real must have feature..
a navigation (custom like) plugin is not a must have.. (you do this by chancing your source code)

I wish #7 was a very very very underrated plugin on WP, called: Art Direction Plugin!
Thats a must have, How many blogs turn out real-boring because all pages or blogposts have the same feeling (layout) Most of the time it’s just a WALL of TEXT you have to read without any or just one graphic. We need this plugin to please your readers eyes.

      Nicholas Cardot said:

I think you make an excellent case here, but I passionately disagree with you. I think that WP-PageNavi is an awesome plugin and I don’t think that it helps your case to argue with exaggerative gestures like, “I hate having 500 plugins in my WP site doing just a very small feature…”

The truth is that if you have a good caching program like W3 Total Cache, you could run 5,000 plugins and would put very little strain on any decent server.

Plus, a WordPress plugin like WP-PageNavi offers a greatly increased user interface making it way easier for your users to navigate throughout the site.

I see very fer well-designed websites that have links at the bottom that say nothing more than “next page” or “last page.”

Pagination should be a core feature of WordPress, but since it isn’t, this becomes an essential piece of the puzzle.

And as far as usability and consistency goes, you would actually want to avoid creating posts that are laid out different from one another unless you are doing it for specific reason such as showcasing certain types of products but that certainly isn’t the need for the majority of bloggers.

      • January 11, 2011

        Seth W said:

        Agreed.

Plugins are an essential part of adding key features to WP core.

The WP development team realizes there are thousands of features they could add that would help bloggers but it would bloat the overall wordpress core. Besides bloating the core many features are only used by some bloggers. Thus plugins were born.

Getting a great Cache system in place, ie. W3 Total Cache and most of your multiple plugin problems are solved. The only major challenge plugins cause are incompatible code between plugins and themes.

WP’s the best because of plugins like WP-Navi. The easier my readers can find my content the better. The end.

          Nicholas Cardot said:

Some people say that you shouldn’t, because WordPress is a heavy CMS as far as how much CPU it can take to load it, but if you heavily cache your pages with one of the caching plugins I mentioned above, you shouldn’t have too much to worry about.

Plug-in extensibility is a great feature of WP but I have to agree that, like any other good thing, it can be carried too far and, like Firefox extensions, it relies on the somewhat shaky assumption that a critical plug-in will be supported for all future versions of the underlying platform.

There are plug-ins that let you run a membership site on WP, for instance, but if that were a critical aspect of my website, I certainly wouldn’t do it that way. I’d use a separate app that is specifically designed for that purpose.

One small, geeky point on #8: interlinking between articles/posts on a site won’t build PageRank, PageRank can only come from the outside. But it will help distribute PageRank, and keywords in anchor tags will help the destination page rank for those keywords.

    Hi Nick,

I like this list. Though, I would say that since I am using most of them already…

Gravity Forms and MaxBlog Press Affiliate Ninja are both new to me. I will have a look at them later. :)

One that is not on your list that I just got and am really loving is called “Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin”.

It is made by the same guy who did commentLuv & it is great. And, it is so, so simple. All that it does is to add a checkbox that commentators much click prior to submitting.

It (currently) seems to be killing most of my spam.

    Anyway, have a nice day!

The two that you mentioned above are actually the only two in the list that are premium plugins. The Gravity forms plugin is around $35 and the Ninja Affiliate Plugin is around $100. I have both and am incredibly happy with them.

I’m very much not a fun of complicating the comment form for the users. I’ve found the Akismet works absolute wonders at catching all the spam.

My first introduction to that plugin was actually a few weeks ago. I went to leave a comment on an article and when I submitted the comment, a popup appeared telling me to prove I’m not a bot. I had to close the popup and check the box.

We’re programmed to enter a name, an email, an optional website and then pour out our hearts. The more we try to step outside the norm on this particular item, the more I find that we confuse those who want to join the conversation.

I was confused at first and had to slow down and read what my error was. I don’t want my readers to feel that way. I’d rather have extra spam in the spam filter that I have to glance through then to fend off one friend who might now want to deal with the extra hassle.

Having said that, the slogan on this site is ‘an artist approach to online business’ which means quite simply that you can have your reasons for using it and be 100% in the right and I can have my reasons for not using at and also be 100% in the right.

Find what works for you and go with it.

Having said that, there has not been a single real comment that akismet labeled as spam (which is the problem I went looking for something) since I got the checkbox.

Well, I am going to need to think about this one.

Thanks for your point of view Nick.

If you use that DB Manager plugin that I mentioned above, it will automatically email you your databse backup which includes all of your posts and comments as often as you prescribe it to. I have mine set every day.

However, having said that, it’s still a great idea to login to your CPanel and manually back up all the files and folders about once or twice a month. Without those, you can easily get all your articles back online, but you’ll have to re-upload any images and theme adjustments that have been made.

I’ve had a few issues with W3 also, but that’s just because I didn’t know how to use it probably. I couldn’t get it to work with WPTouch but that was because it kept sending my files to the cloudfront and the URL’s in the theme weren’t relative to the cloud. I figured that one out a few days ago.

I’m not sure how it might have been conflicting with that plugin, but there’s probably a configuration that can be adjusted.

    Hey Nicholas,

Hope 2011 is treating you well so far :) .

These are fantastic resources. I’ve bookmarked this page so I can refer to it later as well.

I use about 4 of these plugins and downloaded “Tweet Old Posts” a while back but still haven’t used it. I know it’s a great idea but was just a bit concerned of having it tweet “news style” posts – such as the coming of the iPad or the latest iPhone app – basically “old news” that are no longer worthy.

Any idea if we can play around with it to simply pick or check off posts you want to be retweeted or those that you don’t?

I’m also curious about HeadSpace – I hadn’t heard of it till now – but will definitely read more about it and possibly consider it since you think so highly of it.

I like the look of the Digg Digg floating icons and have seen it used on numerous sites. I currently use GetSocial (also floating) and am happy with it so far. Are you familiar with it?

I have a ridiculous amount of plugins installed and am looking to slowly disable those that don’t really benefit me or my readers in any way – plus – it may help speed my loading time a bit.

Thanks again for sharing this very helpful roundup. Will go through the rest that I don’t already know or use.

Have a great evening and all the best to you in 2011.

    Cheers

For the Tweet Old Post plugin, you can specify a date range to tweet from. I have mine set to tweet posts that are between 1 day and 14 days old so that it won’t ever share something more than two weeks old. I really only like sharing my material that is somewhat newer. I find it’s most successful.

If you’re using GetSocial, I would just recommend staying with it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

As far as the number of plugins go, I find that as long as you have a good caching program, you can get away with quite a bit because all of those plugins only have to run once in a while.

I hope that helps a little bit.

What do you use to stop that if anything? or do you just back up your database nightly?

      MK Safi said:

      Hi Mike,

If by “pushed” you mean email, you can use an autoresponder service, like AWeber, GetResponse, or MailChimp. Put a sign-up form on your site and setup an email series that sends a weekly article in the order that you specify.

Alternatively, you can create a WordPress membership site where subscribers get access to a new article every week. They will have to come to your site and login to see the new article. The membership plugin must support gradual content delivery if you want to do this.

The added benefit of using a membership plugin over a simple opt-in form is that most membership plugins also integrate with autoresponder services. I mean, they automatically add new subscribers to your mailing list so that you can notify your subscribers of the availability of new articles on your site by email. This all can be setup to work automatically.

      Good luck,

      MK

After looking through your list (fantastic list by the way), I just want to add one more to the list – EzAffiliateCash Ads Plugin for WordPress. I believe it used to be a paid plugin but the owner has made it free recently; it’s an all-in-one advertisement plugin that allows you to test different popular advertising methods on wordpress powered websites. I personally have tested it on my blogs (WP 3.x) and it works great. If you want to find out more about it you can visit http://www.adsplugin.com

I don’t think you can find it on the official wordpress.org/extend/plugins list but it’s indeed a gem!

    Just my 2 cents!

    Hey Nick,

I noticed you didn’t include any plug-ins for comments in your list (and that this site doesn’t seem to be using one). I’m just wondering what your thoughts are on that kind of thing.

I just started a blog myself, and I’d like to connect with my readers through the comment board, and encourage discussion. But, I’m kinda new at all this.

The comment system that comes with wordpress looks ok – it allows threaded comments and all that, but it seems kind of anonymous, too. Sure, you can put your name, but it could be different every time, and you don’t build any kind of profile (user rating or post count, stuff like that), and you always have to re-enter your information every time you post, which I figured might be annoying to people who post very regularly. (Or maybe, some of this is just my assumptions. again I’m not too familiar with WP).

So, I decided to install intensedebate, because I could give people the option to connect through one of their social-network profiles like facebook or twitter. I thought the ability to be known for your posts would encourage people to comment more. What I’m wondering now is… is this kind of board really better?
Or will the added step of logging just turn people Off from commenting.

There’s also the question of controlling spam, or of having to moderate comments all the time… or whether to just let them be posted unchecked…
(if using the default comment board)

If was sure that intense debate was the way to go, but seeing popular blogs like yours Not using them is a bit confusing.

The real problem is that I’m not just new to the world of blogging, I’m also very new to even commenting on these boards – so I’m feeling pretty caveman here.

I’ll go out on a limb and assume that you feel the basic comment board is better than a disqus or intensedebate powered board, since that’s what I’m seeing on this site. My question is, why?

Sorry for a long drawn out question, which is probably dumb to begin with, but I figure the sooner I ask all my dumb questions, the sooner I’ll have the right answers.

(PS. I addressed this to Nick, but I’m sure there are lots of knowledgeable people on the board who could help me on this one. What are your thoughts? Simple comments vs. Intense debate or Disqus. and Why?)

Also, now that I’m on my second post, I noticed that I did NOT have to re-enter my information like I’d expected. Shows how much I know…

I definitely don’t use any plugins to power the actual comments section because I think that it alienates folks who don’t want to have to sign up. Every obstacle is another reason for them not to comment. I use Akismet to control spam and it catches 99% of it.

I prefer my basic board because users don’t have to login. They can just hit the button and drop their comment, however it’s not set in stone. Chris Brogan uses Disqus. Others use LiveFyre, IntenseDebate and more. This is an art. I can give you my opinions, but ultimately follow your gut.

        Thanks Nick,
I’ll stick with my IntenseDebate board for a bit, and see how it goes. My blogs still so new, and I’m so new at it all, that a little experimenting is in order anyways. Since the comments can be transferred over, I’ll probably end up trying them all.

PS thanks for all the great content. This site has been a great resource for me already, and I’ve hardly scratched the surface. Keep it coming!

I would highly recommend using Ultimate SEO rather than Headspace. It has additions like the removal of the /category/ permalink structure and has a comparative function to SEO smartlinks (actually better) built into it as well.

Also, it’s much much easier to add analytics and webmaster tools than Headspace.

Hi Nicholas, great write up and list of plugins. I use some of these on my Thesis blog. Regards the W3 Total cache plugin – this is one my favorite plugins out there for WordPress and it really helps speed your website loading time.

However, if you’re using the Thesis theme and the W3 Total cache plugin, you might run into some issues with your blog.

Some users such as myself had my blog site design options all reseted by this plugin and it was a nightmare to get things back to norm.

Readers here might find this work around helpful if they run into having their Thesis theme site options reseted http://bingohq.co.uk/thesis-design-option-setting-issue-solution/

There’s many different ways of increasing your website ranking or Page Rank – a Google term for website popularity. However Page Rank is determined on the quality of the back link (among other factors) and so getting a back link from a high Pag eRank blog is hugely beneficial to the Page Rank of your website.
I’m not high profile blogger and just blogging for more than one year, but my experience has been helped me to complete a survey for the journey of gaining page rank for all my blogs although I’m not very sure about how google page rank algorithm works.

Yes, no body can exactly know how Google page rank algorithm works because Google has never make known to public officially. But, we can predict how to gain page rank although it is not 100% percent the correct way!

    thanks

W3C Total Cache is an outstanding plugin and certainly deserves the number one spot on your list. I’ve been using it for quite a while and what a difference it makes!! If you take the time to set up browser caching properly it really does go a long way. On my site, after a visitor loads the page for the first time, each page load after that is practically instant. The CDN integration is pretty useful too.
