10 Easy Ways to Attract Traffic To Your Blog
Our host today is John Gregory. If you're interested in getting in front of the readers of Site Sketch 101, check out our guest posting invitation here.
You want traffic, and you want it fast. You must remember something that most of the bloggers seem to forget: Blogging takes time. Don’t start blogging with the thought that you will have millions of follower, subscribes, readers. Think small in the beginning, so you don’t get disappointed in the end. But still I will point out the 10 easy ways you can get traffic.
1. Write Original Content
You have probably heard this one a lot. Well let me explain everything, why is this so important. First notice that I am saying write, not copy. You must remember that if you want traffic, copying text from other websites or blogs will get you nowhere. Why is that you ask ? Simple to answer. When somebody searches at Google and they search the topic that you copied from the website, they will not find your post, but the post that you copied.
And if you did not understand a thing I just said let me break it down for you. COPYING = BAD. Remember that and you will have no problems.
If you want to write interesting content, start searching and gaining information about the post you are going to write. Make it with your words, be creative, and you will gain some traffic. Adding pictures and videos to your post is a good way to attract the eye of the reader.
2. Tell Your Friends and Family
In the beginning, when your blog has only 5-10 posts, and you don’t have any traffic, the people that will help you out a little are your family and your friends. They might not be a lot of people, but do not worry about it. It’s a good start. And your friends and family could tell other people, and tell those people to tell other people, and so on. This way you will get a lot of traffic for your soon to grow blog.
3. The Power of Social Media
Social media like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and Forums will get you some traffic. This is really simple, and still not a lot of bloggers use it. Remember do not spam to your Facebook friends. You want to have folks go to your blog, you don’t want them to get annoyed and block you. Add more friends to your account, so you can tell them about your blog, but don’t over do it. Facebook can block if you get too many friends in no time so don’t use any Friend adding engines.
4. Tag Your Content
The tags in your blog are really important. They are as important as the content that you write. In other words the content and the tags are the things that you must focus on. But don’t write tags that are not in your content. Because if Google learns about this you can say goodbye to your AdSense account. And not only that, people will not read your post.
Most people just put “sex” in there and hope to get traffic to their blog. Not going to happen. So be careful what you write in the tags, it will help you!
5. Never Stop Writing
This is simple to understand. Write a lot of good and original content. Day by day you will get more people looking at your posts. Sooner or later you will get your first subscriber. The more you write, the bigger the chance of somebody finding your blog from Google’s search. But never copy the content that you write. This is a little hard trick because you want all of the posts that you have written to be original.
6. RSS Feed
This will allow people to subscribe to your blog and when you post something new, your subscribers are the people that will learn first about it. And the only way they will subscribe to you is if you have good to read content. Be sure to interest your subscribers, because they can always unsubscribe and this way you lose one reader.
7. Guest Blogging
Guest blogging gives you a chance to reach new readers. It’s not easy, but it is effective. Guest blogging is by far the best way to get more traffic. This way you write your original content that will be viewed by other readers, that could come later to your blog and subscribe to you.
8. Write comments to other blogs
Now this might not get you a lot of traffic, but it will help you out. All you have to do is write a comment to another blog. Do not annoy the blogger. Don’t spam, in other words. Don’t write simple things like “Nice post” or ” Awesome post, check out my blog www…” Don’t do that. Write something about the post of the blogger, take your time, think of something that will interest that person and make him to come to your blog and check it out.
9. Advertise yourself
This is another simple, but not easy way to get a lot of traffic in no time. And here is where friends that own big websites or are probloggers come handy. They can advertise your blog “shout it out” on their blog or website. And this will bring you a lot of traffic. You always advertise your self by using “Google AdWords” and “Facebook”. You will have to pay money for the last two, but the traffic you will get will be amazing. It can go up to thousands of people in one day or even more.
10. Be patient
Last but not least, be patient. This is actually the most important advice you can get. Because if you are not patient none of the tricks that I wrote will work. Don’t rush it.
Like I said it takes time. I am not trying to scare you or anything, but it could take up to years until your blog gets good traffic. Be realistic, and don’t think it will happen over night.
There you go. 10 Easy steps you can do to attract traffic to your blog. Blogging is not easy, you must have that in mind. If you have any questions or other tricks about getting traffic leave a comment.

The thing I struggle most with is time, but that’s only in the last year and a half in my 10+ years of blogging. I was born with a pen in my hand. =)
Although I can attest to the importance of writing all the time and being very, very consistent with it. My blog had doubled its viewers every month for the first four months it was up. Then my daughter started teething and toddling, and my time went to zero. And so did my reader count.

These days everyone is jumping on the “make money with your blog” bandwagon, without having any original content that they feel passionately about. Basically, they are missing the entire point of a blog! You need to be providing something worthwhile, with an original voice. Content is the KEY

People at the embryonic stage of business think that it will be all that easy. Nothing good comes easy.
Just remember that people have been there before you so you have to exercise patience.

You spelled Attract incorrectly in the title btw. (I just left massively epic comment and wordpress died as I hit submit so I apologise for the lack of value here, but really – I only have one awesome comment in me each time.)
Fark I hate it when it does that.

Nice post, good list but i have found a guest posting to be by far the most effective.
It works great in a lot of the bigger industries but the most ruthless and competitive niches its hard to find blogs to guest post on.
In that case, i try to find marginally related blogs outside of the niche.

Highly recommend guest blogging because it’s good for links as well as traffic. The only caveat is to pick the potential guest blogs carefully and shoot for the most popular in your niche first. A guest blog is cool, but if it’s only sending over 2 visitors a month then the post is better placed on your own site.

Traffic definitely takes a lot of time to start coming in to your website or blog. I remember when i first created a blog, i didn’t know anything about SEO or marketing at all. I kept writing and writing and that first blog of mine still gets a fair amount of traffic even without doing nothing to promote it.
Mark@PR Agency Derby said:
I especially liked the guest blogging advice. For a while now, i’ve written a lot of articles and then distributed via article directory submission sites.
The effect is patchy and i’ve found it hard to shale the feeling that its for SEO purposes rather than for eyeballs.
Guest blogging i think could be my silver bullet. After all, i produce a lot of content, so why not go looking for a home for it?

Hey John,
I have often heard that the first 3-4 months you need to spend more time than you actually do on your blog before you starting a good reader base. Being social and interacting with others is great way to get your name out there and if you content is good then people will begin to notice and subscribe to your rss feed.
Either paying people to do ad swaps are also a good idea (or if you can get some for free that will work too)

It’s interesting that you suggest recruiting your family to support your blog when you first start out, John. It reminds me of all the jokes about your mom being your only reader.
To my knowledge, I think my sister has visited my blog once but I don’t think any of my other family members have done so. My wife read my posts early on, but even she doesn’t read my blogs anymore.
I just blog about topics for which my family has no interest. It’s one of the reasons I started blogging in the first place. I think if I’d recruited them early on in my blog their disinterest would have come across in their comments.
How do you guard against being perceived as the stereotypical blogger in their mother’s basement employing this strategy?
